Wildlife Watch

Wildlife Watch is the junior branch of The Wildlife Trusts,
the UK's leading club for young environmentalists

What is Wildlife Watch?

Wildlife Watch is a nationwide club for children and young teenagers interested in wildlife and conservation.

Whether going on wildlife "safaris", pond-dipping, creating gardens for wildlife or enjoying picnics and baked potatoes, Wildlife Watch members get a lot of fun out of learning about the environment. They also receive a full colour magazine "Watchword", a colour poster and a local newsletter.

Wildlife Watch is the way to get children actively involved in their environment. Now, more than ever, our , project-based, investigative approach to environental education is relevant to everyone.

By taking natural history topics and environental issues as subjects for projects, Wildlife Watch helps children to:

Understand their surroundings
Contribute to scientific research
Develop an awareness of the environment
Have fun and learn

How can I get involved?

Wildlife Watch Club

Wildlife Watch is a club for young people who care about wildlife and the environment. Members can enjoy the challenge of national projects, take part in the Gold Award Scheme and attend their local Wildlife Watch group. Watchword, the club magazine, is sent out three times a year and includes information on national activities as well as a newsletter covering local events.

Become a Leader

A national network of local Wildlife Watch groups covers most of the UK. Each one is run by a volunteer, someone like yourself. A typical Wildlife Watch leader is someone who enjoys working with children, is enthusiastic and concerned about wildlife and the environment, and enjoys being out of doors. No specialist knowledge is required.

If you feel you would like to start a group in your area, we are here to help you. We will provide:

  • a Leader's Pack outlining everything you need to know, from facts about woodpeckers to fund raising techniques
  • LINK magazine – specially produced three times a year to update you on current events, news and ideas for activities
  • advance notice of all projects
  • low-cost training courses to help you run a group
  • special access to nature reserves in some areas
  • full public liability insurance

Once you have been registered, all materials and services are provided free. But you may prefer to help an existing group. By doing this you will find out more about how Wildlife Watch works, and what fun it can be. Adult helpers are always welcome as a useful extra pair of hands.
