Lapwing

Large flocks of lapwings gather in open fields at this time of year. In flight, the flapping of their rounded wings creates a flickering appearance which may have given the bird its name. It derives from the Old English word hleapewince, which means "leap with a flicker in it". Their alternative name, peewit is from the haunting call which can be heard in spring.

Though still a familiar bird in Lincolnshire, lapwing numbers have declined dramatically. In England and Wales, since 1960 their numbers have dropped by 80%.

Two lapwings in flight are featured in the logo of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.
